[2012] Taylor P (4th hour Advanced Lit): The Fault in our Stars

SETTINGThe setting of The Fault in our Stars is in Indianapolis, and Amsterdam. Hazel (main character) lives in Indianapolis, but goes to Amsterdam in the middle of the novel.

CLIMAXOne climax in the novel is when Augustus uses his wish to go to Amsterdam with Hazel so they can meet their favorite author.

POINT OF VIEWThe story was told in first person from Hazel grace Lancaster. It shows he thoughts, feelings, and what she is actually saying to others.

THEMEThe theme of The Fault in our Stars even though there is pain in the world, there is also joy. Hazel feels she is like a grenade: When she blows (dies from her cancer) everyone around her will be hurt. But when Augustus dies, she understands that pain like that can't be avoided. Since dying is certain and universal, all people will experience it. But as Hazel comes to recognize over the course of the novel, it isn’t necessarily something one should avoid. She wouldn't take back her love for Augustus no matter what. In the book it says "Without pain, how could we know joy?"

MAIN CHARACTERS:Hazel, Augustus, Hazel's parents, Peter Van Houten, and Isaac

Hazel Grace LancasterProtagonist

The protagonist, Hazel Grace Lancaster, is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the novel, she doesn't see a point in making friends, or having any sort of social life. Once she meets Augustus, she changes. Augustus shows Hazel there is a life worth living with cancer. In the beginning of the book Hazel says "Whenever you read a cancer booklet or website or whatever, they always list depression among the side effects of cancer. But in fact, depression is not a side effect of cancer. Depression is a side effect of dying." Hazel has a very bad attitude towards life in the beginning. In the end of the book Hazel says "I do Augustus. I do". She says this after reading a letter from Augustus where he says"You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers." This shows how she is happy with her decision to love Augustus. Hazel probably wouldn't have made this decision in the beginning of the story.

One choice Hazel made in The Fault in our Stars, is to go to amsterdam with Gus to meet their favorite author, Peter Van Houten. Augustus had recently found out that he his cancer, osteosarcoma, had spread, but he doesn't tell Hazel. By going to Amsterdam, Augustus didn't do the treatment he could've been doing if he hadn't gone on the trip. This resulted in Augustus passing away later in the book (In the story it says he would've passed away with or without the treatment, anway).
