The Elements of Art

Color- Every color can be bright, dull, dark, or light- Produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye- There are 3 properties: hue (the name we give), intensity (the strength and vividness), and value (its lightness or darkness)

Line - Different tools make different kinds of lines - The path of a point moving through space- It can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume.

Texture- Either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual "feel" of a two-dimensional work

Examples of Line

Shape- Can come in different types and sizes- Is an enclosed space- The boundaries are defined by other elements of art- Are limited to two dimensions: length and width

Examples of Color

Form- Three dimensional, geometric figure- Takes up space- Allows us as viewers to mentally capture the work, understand it, and attempt to analyze it

Value- Dark and light in painting or drawing

Space- Exists around us- We use illusions to make space in art- Can be positive (white or light) or negative (black or dark)- Can be opened, closed, shallow, deep, two-dimensional, or three-dimensional
