The dirty thirties

Many men travelled across the country on the tops offreight trains looking for work.

For many people, "going on the dole" was embarrassing.

Work camps, that became more like slave camps, were set up for unemployed men.

Women worked in factories with low wages and bad conditions.

Drought and grasshoppers troubled farmers. Many areas turned into dust bowls, leaving farmers broke and forcing them to leave their properties.

The Dirty Thirties

Many immigrants were deported after being asked to come to the country in past years.

This cartoon tells us that the Liberal Party did not take responsibility for their mistakes and now they are blaming Bennett.

Jewish people were blamed for the depression and faced major discrimination.
