[2015] Nicholas Buyck: The Devil's Arithmetic

"The Devil's Arithmetic" refers to the the idea that for every one person who dies instead of you is one more day that you live

"Arbeit macht frei" is a German phrase meaning "work makes you free." The slogan was placed over the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps

The Butterfly represented freedom from the camp. Butterflies can fly away from the camp and when prisoners see the butterfly, the wish they could just fly away. Butterflies are beautiful, and when the prisoners see the butterfly, they realize that the concentration camp is so grim, barren, and terrible, but there is still beauty in the world.

6 MILLION

For seven weeks I’ve lived in here,Penned up inside this ghetto. But I have found what I love here. The dandelions call to meAnd the white chestnut branches in the court.Only I never saw another butterfly. That butterfly was the last one,Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto.

The significance of 6 million was that was the number of Jews that were killed during the Holocaust. In The Devil's Arithmetic, Hannah tells the girls that 6 million jews will die, but the girls don't believe her.
