The Dangers of Driving

Dear teenagers: Know the risks of the road!

1. Car accidents involving injury happen every 14 seconds. 2. More than 1.2 million people die in road traffic crashes every year. 3. . As many as 50 million people can be injured or disabled by road traffic crashes every year. 4. Teenagers, although making up only 10% of the general population, make up 25% of those killed in crashes with impaired drivers.

Around 34% of people killed were victims of alcohol related crashes. Many of the impaired drivers had believed that they "were fine to drive."Actually, impaired driving is a crime! According to the Criminal Code of Canada, a police officer can determine that a driver is impaired even if their BAC (blood alcohol content) is less than 0.08%.

The Dangers of Driving

Shocking Facts!

In people aged 15 - 29, road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death. In people aged 5 - 14, they are the second leading cause of death worlwide. However, seatbelts reduce death or injury rates by 50%. They are there for a reason!

Always wear a seat belt!

It takes only 20 minutes for alcohol to get into your bloodstream, affecting your vision, coordination, reflexes, and more. Once there, the alcohol is stuck until your liver burns it up (it will burn about one drink an hour). There is no way to quicken this process!

Drinking and driving is not cool!

Obeying the speed limit can save lives!

Speeding is a factor in over 1/3 of all fatal traffic accidents! Of these casualties, 78% of them were male. Sadly in these deaths, people aged 16 - 20 were overrepresented.
