Where was it located?

After the people of Rhodes defeated Demetrios Polorketes, they expressed their pride in themselves with the Colossus' creation.

What happened to the Colossus?

The Colossus of Rhodes was built in Rhodes, Greece. It was believed to be located at the eastern promontory of the Mandraki harbour.

The Colossus was about 110 feet tall and made of bronze

It was built by a sculptor named Charles of Lindos

Who built it?

Unfortunately, the Colossus was destroyed in a massive earthquake that happened around 226 B.C. The earthquake broke the Colossus at it's weakest point, the knee.

How long did the Colossus stand?

The Colossus stood a mere 56 years.

It sat in ruins for almost a millennium, until the Arabs invaded Rhodes in 654 A.D. and dismantled it and sold the parts to a Jewish man from Syria. It is said that it took the man 900 camels to transport the pieces of the Colossus.

The Colossus inspired the creation of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
