[2015] Kayla Rizzo: The Cold War

North Korea and South Korea split. The North was communist and controleled by the Soviet Union.The South was controlled by the USA. The North invaded the South and started war. An American general successful divided the sides.

. The communist revolution was led by Fidel Castro. The United States was unsuccessful in stopping him. After this revolution, Fidel worked with the Soviet Union to expand communism in the West. The Soviets built a missile base in Cuba, threatening with nuclear weapons. The United States surrounded the island. Nobody did anything until the two sides agreed to lower thier defenses. This scare was important because we almost engaged in a nuclear war.

The Truman Doctrine : 1947; offers economic and military aid to countries who were attempted to stay away from Communism and rule by the Soviet Union. The Marshall Plan : an enacted plan by the United States to give tons of money to the anti-Communism effort

THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL AND THE BREAK UP OF THE SOVIET UNION

The Communism in Easter Europe begins o diminish after the war. n the Soviet Union, Gorbachev resigns, and the Union breaks up. Yeltsin is his replacement, and he promises lots of reform. However, the reform fails. Communism is gone. The Eastern nations now have the struggles of economical and political turmoil after the war.

VIETNAM WAR

North Vietnam was ruled by a Communist, and the South was not. The United States sent troops to Vietnam to stop the spread of communism. The USA didn't win this war. In 1975, the Vietnams were connected under Communism.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE BERLIN WALL

TThe Soviet Union constructed the Berlin Wall to seperate East and West Germany in 1961. The wall was about 10 feet high and had barbed wire along it. There were Soviets there to shoot anyone who attemoted to switch sides.

Detente means the relaxation of tensions. This act started during the Cold War by president Nixon, who attempted to ease tensions in the world. This included SALT

THE NUCLEAR ARMS RACE

The superpowers engaged in a race to create the best weapons for their countries. This included nuclear weapons. This race increased the tensions and stakes of the war, as well as the fear level of the world.

PERESTROIKA : introduced by Gorbachev of the Soviet Union to make the economy more efficientGLASNOST : introduced by Gorbachev as well, as his second reform; encouraged people to voice their ideas and suggest ways to improve Soviet society
