The Civil War

The SouthThe sothern states that made up this side of the war were called the Confederacy. They were fighting for states rights. They did not want the north or the rich states to control and govern them. They wanted the freedom to continue to live as they were living and that way of living included slaves that their familes had owned for geverations.

The NorthThe northern states that made up this side of the war were called the Union. They believed in a strong federal government. They fought to keep the country together. The North didn't want the south leaving and starting their own nation. The union also fought to abolish slavery.
