The war was fought over the issue of slavery. The Union (North) wanted to abolish slavery, while the Confederacy (South) wanted to keep slavery as well as extend it into new territories in the West.
The Civil War was an extrememly bloody battle that divided our nation into two parts, the Union and the Confederacy.

The War officially began with the Southern troups bombed a U.S. military fort in South Carolina called Fort Sumter.
Facts
The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the war. 52,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing in action. After the battle President Lincoln gave his famous speech the Gettysburg Address stating that he is committed to perserving the Union as well as the ideals this country was found upon.
The North (Union) won the war. The next 20 years were tough on the entire nation but expecially the Southern states. This difficult time is know as the Reconstruction Era. The states were admitted back into the Union and the slaves were freed.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president. His anti-slavery beliefs were the reason the Southern states seceded.
