The Catcher In The Rye

the CATCHER in the RYE

A Coming-Of-Age Novel

Holden tries to understand the world around him. He struggles to identify what is real and what is phony.

Holden ends his journey with a newfound direction in life. He wants to be the "catcher in the rye".

He is at one of the lowest points in his life: caught between childhood and adulthood.

He hates phonies, but is a huge phony himself.

He only understands and connects with children, and realizes they are the only people worth respecting.

Georgia Peake

At the beginning of the novel, Holden has no direction in life.
