THE CARBON CYCLE

Planting more trees removes CO2 from the atmosphere. When animals eat the plants, the carbon passes to the animals. When they die, the carbon passes into the soil and after thousands of years becomes fossil fuels such as oil or coal. We burn these fuels for industry, heating and transport and release the carbon back into the atmosphere as CO2. People and animals also release CO2 into the atmosphere when they  breathe. The carbon which becomes a gas again, is used in photosynthesis and the carbon cycle starts again.
