The Book Thief

Tips & Strategies

"The Book Thief" is based around the foster family of the recently adopted Liesel Meminger. The book is set during the time of the infamous Halocaust. At one point in the book Hitlers laws upon the Jews affect the family in great circumstances. The book follows the life story of Liesel Meminger recapped by no other then Death itself.

When reading "The Book Thief" it would be helpful if you did a bit of reseach throughout the book or before reading the book. This would be helpful beacsue "The Book thief" is based around a family situated during the time of the Halocaust. It would be best to research the laws during the time, to fully understand the circumstances some people went through. For example “After the Nuremberg laws came in, forbidding Jews to have citizenships and for Germans and Jews to intermarry”(Zusak 192). Researching will give you background information to connect to. This leads to my next strategy, while reading the book, it's best that you connect/reflect to the world around you. It would be helpful for you to be open to anything the book makes you think. For example this quote "They come after me, as I wander through the streets of molested cities. They beg me to take them with me. Your time will come, I convince them” (Zusak 308) can potentially make you question relgion or beliefs. It would be best for you to be open to this, to help you open up more to the different perspectives among the Halocaust.

Lasting Impact

The book leaves the reader bonechilled while bringing up problems in our society regarding our goverment, war and our perception upon Death itself.
