the Black Death
What The Plague WasThe Black Death, or Bubonic Plague, was a deadly disease that killed many, many people in Europe in the 1300's. It spead to and from many places, starting in Asia and coming to Europe by both land and sea."Although it is impossible to calculate exactly how many people died from the plague, evidence suggests that it killed the lives of as many as 25 million Europeans," said Mr.Dowling on his website, Mr.Dowling.com. "It was almost 1/3 of the continent's population," They then said on History.com. And by the time the wholepandemic played itself out, a few years later, about 25-50% of Europe's population had fallen.
The Plague was caused by many things, the main cause being rats and fleas. The boats and ships carrying goods from Asia and affected areas in Europe who docked at the ports were usually infested with the rats. They jumped out into the port cities and their fleas then hopped onto humans, biting them and passing a bacteria that caused the plague. "People can get the plague when they are bitten by a flea that carries the plague bacteria from infectedrodents," they explained in moredetail in the NY Times website. It also spread because of the dirty, compact living conditions the people lived in.
TheCausesof the Plague
The Symptoms The Plague had many symptoms that went along with being sick. Some symptoms were fever, bleeding, nausea, vomitting, and pain in the joints. "Strangest of all, they were covered in mysterious black boils that oozed blood and pus and gave the illness it's name, The Black Death," they say in History.com in their aricle on the plague. They also said, on the howstuffworks website, that "Physicians had no idea what to do with the tumors and black 'buboes' that ravaged victim's bodies." The Black spots were also often called 'God's Tokens' for "God would soon take" them after they started to appear.
The Plague's Route The Plague was spread to and from many places in Asia and Europe. It originated in Central Asia and then spread to outer Europe by sea and land routes. "By 1348, the Plague had reached the interior of Italy which lost half of it's poulation," They said in the CRF website. By 1349, the Black Death swept into Central Europe and Scandinavia. It even reached as far as western Greenland. The Black Death cirl-ced all around the continent, wiping out much of Europes Population.
