The Beat Movement

The poetry expresses explicitly the desire, already in the air in California and especially in San Francisco, to release the verses from the isolation of libraries. He tried to work out a new poetic language suitable for expressing different and rebellious artistic sensibility, which was to occur even with a non common lifestyle. Provocatively, the pacifist and anarchist individualism, freedom and sexual promiscuity, alcohol and drugs were the tools liberators. As Lawrence Ferlinghetti wrote in an essay on the poetry of San Francisco, published in the "Chicago Review" in 1958, the new poetry could be called "street poetry", as was to bring poetry into the street, where it once was, out faculties and, above all, out of the printed pages. The word “printed”, in fact, had made the poetry silent, while it should be a spoken poetry, an oral message.

Beat movement, also called Beat Generation, American social and literary movement originating in the 1950s .Beat doesn’t mean tired , or bushed, so much as it means beato, the Italian for beatific : to be in a state of beatitude , like St. Francis, trying to love all life, trying to be utterly sincere with everyone, practising endurance, kindness, cultivating joy of heart.
