The battle of Nashville was fought around December 15th to December 16th, 1864.General Thomas saw his chance to deal a determined blow to General Hood. At Nashville, a big group of Yankees faced a rebel group estimated at around half their size. On the morning of December 15, Thomas sent a group of soldiers under General Steedman to against the Confederates’ right flank. The Union troops took control of the Confederate trenches and drove the rebels back about a mile. The entire Confederate line gave way and sent General Hood’s soldiers from the field in a total rout. Only the valiant rear-guard action of General Lee had prevented complete destruction of the Confederate army. General Hood and his hurt army retreated to Mississippi. In January 1865, General Hood resigned his command.
