The Battle of Iwo Jima

Destroyers pound the upper shore. Guns fire all around me. I was in the middle of the battle of Iwo Jima, an island just off the coast of Japan. The battle commenced on Febuary 19, 1945 and ended on March 26 . 77,000 marines landed on that island and many of them have been killed and 20,000 wounded. The Japaniese force of 22,000 has been destroyed except all but 200 who surrendered. Out of all the marines who died during WWII, 1/3 died during the battle of Iwo Jima. Many memories come from that island, most are not good ones, but one stands out amung all.The Picture you see in the background was taken when the Marines captured a stratiegic hill on the Island. Three of the men pushing the flag up died on the other side of that hill. This picture has been remembered with the thought that the American spirit will always push through. In the end, this island helped lead to the end of the war. Our bombers couldnt reach the mainland of Japan untill we took these islands near it. It was then when we could release our ultimate weapon, the Atomic Bomb.

"They could see us, but we couldn't see them.""We hunkered down, not quite kneeling," Miller recalled. "We were shoulder-to-shoulder and we heard some gunfire." "I remember saying to him: 'Gus, that was a close one.' I looked over to him, and he slipped to the ground. I said I'd go over and get some help."But it was too late. "The bullet that killed him was 4 inches from my shoulder," Miller said. "He died in my arms."This was from an interview on nbc from a veteran that fought on iwo jima. It shows how in an instant things can change and how scary it must have been not knowing where your enemy was untill you are hit with a bullet.
