On the morning of September 17, 1862, Union assaults and vicious Confederate counterattacks raged throughout Miller's cornfield and the west woods. Later on, near the middle of the day, Union assaults against the Sunken Road pierced the Confederate center. Towards the end of the day, the Union made a final push and pushed over a stone bridge at Antietam Creek. This was the bloodiest single day in American History and ended in a draw, but the Confederates retreated giving Lincoln his desired "victory" before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.
