The Awakening

Victorian women were expected to always be calm and submissive. Excitability was considered a sign of poor health and would require less activity and confinement within the house.

The Awakeningby Kate Chopin

Kate Chopin was vilified for her depiction of an independent woman who was willing to forfeit her marriage and her children in order to find her own expression of happiness.

Wealthy Victorian women were not allowed to hold jobs and were expected to supervise household activities, including the raising of children. They had servants and nannies to actually do the work.
