In 1938 German physicist Otto Hahn discovered how to split the uranium atom. Hungarian scientist and refugee Leo Szilard believed the nuclear energy released during fission could be harnessed to produce bombs capable of severe destruction. After this discovery, he wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt to get immediate research to prevent Germany from getting to the use of it. Szilard had Albert Einstein sign this letter to get more appeal that his concern was valid. President Roosevelt appointed the Briggs Committee to investigate nuclear fission on October 1939.

A US B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 6, 1945 instantly killing around 80,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, causing the deaths of 40,000 more.

The government didn't take the matter seriously until 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. That and the success of the Nazi millitary pushed America to learn information about atomic energy before the Axis powers.

In June of 1942 the War Department’s Army Corps of Engineers took charge of the effort to develop an atomic bomb.

The top-secret projects' code name was 'Manhatten
