The American Civil War

The American Civil War

The American Civil War was not originally a fight over slavery. The war began as a fight between the Union, trying to keep the South from seceding, and the Confederacy, wanting more states' rights. It wasn't until the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that the war shifted its focus to the abolition of slavery.Since both sides of the war are American, the Civil War is the deadliest war in US history. Roughly 620,000 Americans lost their life in the Civil War. That is about half of the total number of American lives lost in all wars combined.Today, many of the preserved battlefields from the American Civil War are threatened by land development.
