The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

~Reading Response Questions~The Alchemist; The Secrets of Nicholas FlamelBy Mizuki Kishida

After reading the opening chapter of this book, there was a feeling of wrongness in my mind. As I first saw the title and the front cover of this book, I was expecting of a fantasy story, which take place in some kind of wonderland or ancient, mythical cities. I think this is because the word “alchemist” reminded me of movies I have seen before which is about witches and magicians which existed long time ago. However, this book starts from where one teenage girl called Sophie Newman living in current day San Francisco, talking with her friend on a phone. I didn’t expected these modern things in this story, so this made me think something wrong is happening in this story. Also, I wondered what will happen next and how the author will connect this to the title, “The Alchemist”.

The model of John Dee

Yes, I like the ending of this book. In the end Nicholas, Sophie, Josh, and Scatty, an ancient soldier helping Nicholas were attacked by the animal zombies which were created by John Dee. They used magic to fight against those monsters, but there were hundreds and thousands of those which continuously reviving with Dee’s magic. Then Witch of Endor helped and assisted them to go through the leygate to escape Paris. At the end, they successfully run away from Dee, but in Paris there is another powerful immortal who is an accomplice of Dee, and those four do not know about him yet. This ending built up great suspense, but overall it was a happy end. Also I think this ending makes readers want to read the next book of this series quickly to know what will happen between the four and the evil immortal man. I’ll predict that in Paris, there will be many elder gods attacking them with the evil immortal, and Nicholas will try to get help from some good gods to awaken the power of Josh to fight against them.

My favourite character in this book is Nicholas Flamel because although he has many mysterious parts, he is faithful, strong man who protect Josh and Sophie from Dee and many powerful gods. Also, he never give up to achieve his goal – get back the Codex and rescue his wife Perenelle from Dee. However, he’s not talkative type of person and sometimes doesn’t speak about important things. For example, he predicted that Josh and Sophie is the special twin in the written prophecy who has gold and silver aura, but he didn’t tell about it to Josh and Sophie at the beginning. Also, he didn’t tell them about the hazardousness of the power awakening process. Though, I think it is a keen decision because if he tell them how dangerous to awaken someone’s magical power, they will avoid getting power and Dee will win the battle. Also, he is an intelligent and friendly man who always come up with a good idea to defeat monsters and, also cared about the twin. These are the reasons why I like him best.

What were your feeling after reading the opening chapter of this book?

Do you like the ending of the book? Why or why not? Do you think there is more to tell? What do you think might happen next?

My favourite character is…….because…..

Yes, I think the title nicely fits the book. The title of this book is “The Alchemist; The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel”. First of all, it will give a reader an idea of what is this book about and who is the main character by saying “Nicholas Flamel”. Also in the title, it says “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel”. This phrase really matches to the book because in this books, Nicholas is a mysterious character who doesn’t speak everything he thought and know. This sometimes irritates Josh and Sophie because Nicholas doesn’t speak important thing and accidently puts them into troubles. Therefore, to the other characters in the book, it is hard for them to understand what Nicholas is thinking, and the word “secrets” really fits him well.

In this book there is a character called Josh Newman, who is friendly and talkative teenager, but also has strong mind and a sense of justice. He has a positive and bright personality that he even say some jokes during serious scenes. However, when some terrible things happen to his sister Sophie, like she fainted away after the process of awakening her magical power, he blamed himself of letting Sophie do some dangerous thing first, and he carried and protected her in the middle of the battle against two evil goddesses and Dee. Therefore, he acts positive to create happy mood, but he thinks serious things in his mind and a reliable man who can protect his important person even he risk his life.

Do you think the title fits the book? Why or why not?
