-In the United States, the booming textile industry of the north brought cotton to weave into cloth to sell to the growing american population.-In the early 1800's, cotton was raised in the southern United States and exported to the mills in England and the north.-Laws forbade the export of English textile machinery, and the written specifications of the machines that would allow them to be constructed in other countries.

The cotton gin removed cotton lint from the seed, producing cotton ready to be made into cloth.
