Two historic incidents involving Al-Qaeda are the attack on the USS Cole in October of 2000 while in the Port of Aden,Yemen for refueling. The ship was hit by a suicide bomber killing many sailors and injuring even more. In Bali, in 2002, Al-Qaeda set off three bombs in heavy tourist areas including one outside the US Consulate. Both attacks were aggressive acts of terrorism with the purpose of killing and harming Americans and those sympathetic to Westerners.

At 11:05pm, a bomb went off in Paddy's bar followed by a car bomb in front of another club. A third bomb went off outside the US Consulate. In total, 202 people were killed and another 200+ were injured. Victims were not just American, people from 21 other countries were killed or injured in the attacks.

A small boat packed with explosives rammed into the USS Cole tearing a 40 foot hole through the ships outer hull. This attack was the deadliest attack against the US military since 1996. 17 sailors were killed and 39 others badly injured. This $1 billion warship incured $250 million in damage.

Al-Queda is an internation Islamic terrorist group founded in Afganistan in 1988 by Osama bin Laden.Al-Qaeda is infamous for terrorist attacks like the one on the USS Cole in the Port of Aden, in Yemen in 2000.Al-Qaeda sprang from the decline of socialism and communism, and is heavily influenced by extreme ideologies with Jihad or holy wars as its main goal.The first actions of Al-Qaeda against American interests were attacks on servicemen in Somalia. The principle stated aims of Al-Qaeda are to drive Americans and American influence out of muslim nations.
