William walker- was an American physician, lawyer, journalist and mercenary, who organized several private military expeditions in Latin America, with the intention of establishing English-speaking colonies under his personal control, known as "filibustering." Walker got the Republic of Nicaragua in 1856 and ruled until 1857, when he was defeated by Central American armies. He was executed by the government of Honduras in 1860.'it amet

Townsend Harris was a successful New York City merchant and minor politician, and the first United States Consul General to Japan. He negotiated the "Harris Treaty" between the US and Japan and is credited as the diplomat who first opened the Empire of Japan to foreign trade and culture in the Edo period.

Unauthorized military expedition into a foreign country to create or support a revolution, actions of adventurers who tried to take control of various Caribbean, Mexican, and Central-American territories by force of arms. The three most prominent filibusters of that era were Narciso López and John Quitman in Cuba and William Walker in Nicaragua. The way they contribute to the expansionism is by disobeying any real order to not cause anymore war in order to gain more land, by conquering other peices of land.

With the advent of the steam engine, he became a leading advocate of modernizing the US Navy and came to be considered The Father of the Steam Navy in the United States.
