TEMPERATURE part 2

TEMPERATURE #2

HEAT&THERMALEXPANSION

TEMPERATURE vs. HEAT

MEASURING TEMPERATURE

Adding heat energy to the atoms or molecules of matter makes them move faster. Fluids, such as water or air, expand when heat energy is added. Removing heat energy makes atoms and molecules move slower. Fluids, such as water or air, contract when heat energy is removed. Changes in heat energy also cause matter to change phases between solid, liquid and gas.

Thermometers work because the liquid inside the thermometer expands with the addition of heat energy from the surroundings and contracts with the loss of heat energy to the surroundings.

HEAT is not the same thing as TEMPERATUREHEAT = the energy that transfers from one object to another because of the difference in temperature between the two objects - heat always flows from higher temperature to lower temperatureTEMPERATURE = measures the average speed of the particles of matter, or more simply, it measues how fast the atoms and molecules are movingHEAT ENERGY depends on the total amount of matter whereas TEMPERATURE depends only on the speed of the atoms or molecules
