The soil description of the temperate grass-land is that its upper layer is moist part of the year but the deeper it becomes the less moisture is available to the plants.

The average rainfall is 10-30 inches and because it's so eratic drought's and forest fires prevent forests from growing. Two main types of grass one being tall-grass in humid and wet conditions and other being short grass growing in dryer conditions.
