Telescopes
Hans Lippershey created the telescope in 1608. Many others who claimed to have made the discovery were Zacharias Janssen, a spectacle-maker in Middelburg, and Jacob Metius .
Back then people didn't have modern technology to study the sky,but that didn't stop them from observing the sky. They observerd the sky using telescopes but they weren't as powerful as they are today.
Telescopes back then
Isaac Newton is credited with building the first practical reflector in 1668 with a design that incorporated a small flat diagonal mirror to reflect the light to an eyepiece mounted on the side of the telescope.
Telescopes Now
Refracting telescopes use lenses to focus the light, and reflecting telescopes use mirrors.
Galileo devoted his time to improving and perfecting the telescope and soon succeeded in producing telescopes of greatly increased power. His first telescope magnified three diameters, but he soon made instruments which magnified eight diameters and finally, one that magnified thirty-three diameters.

Now thanks to Galileo we can now see the stars obove us. Today scientist have improve the telescope so much that you could probably see Jupiter from Earth. Telescopes were such a great discovery because back then people could only look at the stars and guess what was up there.
