The impact that technology has on the youth of today is clearly huge containing an array of positive and negative effects. It is important not just for teachers but for parents as well to be aware of the issues adolescents face and the strategies they can use to overcome the negative impacts of technology.

Unfortunately as adolescents are developing their individual identities online they are susceptible to a number of disadvantages caused by the rise of social media in the last few years as this learning is often occurring un modulated and out of sight. Such disadvantages include; • Internet Addiction • Loss of Privacy• Identity Theft• Cyber bullying, Cyber stalking and Cyber grooming• ‘Facebook Depression• ‘Sexting’

This increase in technological availability and a larger amount of time being spent online has resulted in adolescents obtaining most of their social/emotional development through the internet rather than in person. This of course has it’s associated positive and negative impacts. Some of the positive impacts of technology for today’s youth will be outlined below, a more in depth article on the matter can be found in this Pediatrics journal:- Adolescents can now develop much wider and closer relationships with other individuals and have the ability to express their individual identity to a large number of people.- They also now have faster/greater access to knowledge and learning that they normally couldn’t have achieved (An example of this could include getting health advice online however this is also associated with the risk of being misinformed).- Youth can now also stay up to date with news/civil and political information.

The Children of today are growing up in a world completely different to our own. The term ‘Digital Native’ is often used to describe this youth as they have grown up not knowing of a way of life that doesn’t involve technology (White et al., 2013). Thanks to rather recent improvements in technology in regard to its speed and availability over 75% of teenagers now own and operate cell phones (O’Keeffe & Pearson, 2011) with most also logging onto their social media more than once a day. Facebook the giant of the social media world in fact now has over one billion active users each month most of whom use Facebook on their mobile device.
