An example of early major highways was the turnpike. They were highways where you had to pay a toll to remain on the road, much like today's except for the fact that they were dirt. These helped reduce travel times because they were flat, and were a straight path.
It was invented in the year 1793 by a man named Eli Whitney. This machine was used to pick the tiny seeds out of cotton before they could be made into clothes. Previously this had to be done by hand, so this machine really helped alot.
These are two of the many trians that have been used in america.
They helped cut grain more efficiently than if it was done by hand. It was a divece with a wheel of paddles that, when pulled by a horse, spun and cut grain six times faster than by hand.
