PBS Kids Example

Training Phase

Week One:15 minutes of training with the reading coach during one on one time.

Week Two:15 minutes for Josh to explore modules with assistance and ask questions if necessary with reading coach.

Week Three:With minimal assitance Josh will complete first corresponding reading module for the week (15 min 3 x a week).

Implementation Phase

Week Four & Five:Josh will independently complete the reading module two for week four and three for week five during reading pull out time (15min 3x a week).

Week Six:Josh will independenty complete module four for week six and be asked to complete three corresponding "games" at home (15 min 3 x a week in school and 10 minutes a night at home).

Week Seven & Eight:Other content areas such as math, science, and history can be integrated with the PBS Kids reading AT.

Assessment Phase

Week Nine:Josh's modules 2-6 will be evaluated by reading coach and teacher based on AT effectiveness.

Week Ten:Josh's at home completion will be assessed by reading coach and teacher for AT effectiveness.

About PBS

Josh is a 5 year old boy who has Autism. Autism is, "A mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts." When Josh started his early childhood program at 3 years old he was mainly nonverbal, self-isolated, and displayed many self stimulatory behaviors. Due to these social and language based deficits Josh was not progressing academically at the appropriate rate for his age. His teacher for the last two years, Ms. Smallfield found that Josh really enjoys cause and effect toys as well as books. Ms Smallfield decided to build upon Josh's motivators and implemented an assistive technology device the Super Talker. The Super Talker has alleviated language based pressures that Josh struggles with and helped him to become more comfortable in the classroom in order to progress academically. With the success of AT with the Super Talker, Ms. Smallfield and Mrs. Harlow (Reading Coach) want to implement AT with PBS Kids in order to help Josh continue to become confident, indepedent, and motivated when reading and writing.

Josh with PBS Kids

This program is a perfect match for Josh due to his area of strength in reading being cause and effect. Josh responds really well to interactive story lines where he can fully immerse all his energy and focus without feeling inadequate. This program also matches with Josh's challenges. PBS Kids allows for Josh to feel comfortable with his vocabulary and sentence structure before using it in a public setting since he often struggles in group settings. PBS Kids aligns with Josh's Language Arts needs in several areas. Josh will be exposed to more words in order to expand his vocabulary, Josh will continue to be motivated during strenuous reading/writing tasks, and will receive the one on one re-teach/support he needs in order to be successful. This program can continue to follow Josh through his elementary school career by supplying him with extra support in correspondance with his reading/writing whole group class instruction.
