Teaching with Tech 8.19.11

Teaching with TechAugust 19, 2011

Many of you are branching out and embracing new technology tools this school year. I've already met with several teachers who are trying to incorporate new tools into their classroom instruction. One question I've been asked several times is, "How do I manage it all?" When you're using a lot of different websites for teaching and learning, like Glogster, Wordle, Prezi, and Wallwisher, and when you ask students to create multiple types of digital projects, it can be challenging to keep up with it all. One solution to that problem is using a wiki as the "hub" for organizing your teaching resources and providing a space for students to create and share digital learning products. A wiki can give you the flexibility of designing an online space that meets your needs in addition to the authority to determine who can access and edit your and your students' work. Here are just a few ideas for using a wiki to organize tech-based teaching and learning:--Post assignment instructions, handouts, presentations, and videos for students and parents to review.--Give students a space to post their learning products. (Students can upload text, photos, videos, Glogs, links, etc.)--Encourage collaboration by giving groups a space to have an online discussion, share resources, ask questions, and create collaborative products.--Use the wiki's discussion thread to post prompts or questions related to each day's instruction and have students respond. If you're interested in learning more about wikis, there will be a training on September 29th. Stay tuned for details.

Upcoming Trainings

Welcome back to school! I hope you enjoyed your summer. I'm excited that you're back! I would love to spotlight the awesome things you do with technology throughout the year. To help me do that, please send me info about ways you and your students use technology. Email me blurbs, work samples, links, etc. so I can share them with others through this Glog. Thanks!!

Glogster - Make a Glog to introduce yourself to your students. Include pictures, videos, and interesting facts. Have your students make a Glog to help their classmates get to know them.Wordle or Tagxedo - Make a word cloud from your class rules. To make certain words larger than others, type them into the text box more than once. Make a word cloud to introduce yourself to your students and have students make word clouds about themselves. Using Tagxedo, you and your students can upload a photo so that your word cloud takes the shape of someone or something.
