He was the first Russian composer whose music became internationally appreciated.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (7/5/1840 to 6/11/1893) was a romantic Russian composer, who created symphonies, concertos, operas and ballets, some of them among the most popular music included in the classical repertoire.

He finished his music career in 1865, in the Saint Petesburg Conservatory. He developed a music based on both Russian and Western-europe styles.

Despite his success, his life was stained by depression and personal crises. Contributory factores were, for example, his mother's early death and his same-sex orientation which he had to kept private. He died at the age of 53, and it's not clear whether it was natural or self-inflicited.

His most famous compositions are Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture, his three ballets (The Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty) and Marche Slave.
