Marco Polo was born between September 15 and 16, 1254, in Venice

traveller whose travels are recorded in Livres des merveilles du monde

He was an Italian merchant traveller

Polo related his memoirs orally to Rustichello da Pisa while both were prisoners of the Genova Republic. Rustichello wrote Devisement du Monde in Langues d'Oil, a lingua franca of crusaders and western merchants in the Orient.

Some minor sources state that Polo was born in the Venetian island of Curzola
