The word "tarantula" comes from the Italian city of Taranto. Centuries ago during their harvest season, an epidmemic of spider bites spread. The people believed that the only cure was to perform a spirited dance known as the tarantella.

Interesting facts- The abdomens of most tarantulas are covered with urticating hairs which irritate eyes, skin, and nose.- The venom of most tarantulas is no more dangerous than a wasp or bee sting.-Tarantulas are very fragile. -Tarantulas have retractable claws on each foot, like cats. -Even though tarantulas don't spin webs, they do use silk.
