TAOISM

Taoism is an Eastern religion with 225 million followers. Although it is more accurately referred to as a philosophy, books on world religions inevitably include it with other religions from Buddhism to Zoroastrianism.

Gods and Beliefs

Taoism does not have a God in the way that other religions do. But the Tao itself is not God, nor is it a god, nor is it loved by Taoists. This may seem surprising as Taoists do use "God-talk" to refer to the Tao.Taoism has many gods, most of them borrowed from other cultures. These deities are within this universe and are themselves subject to the Tao.Many of the deities are gods of a particular role, instead of a personal divine being and have titles rather than names.

Holidays

Lao Tzu's birthday on the 15th day of the 2nd lunar month as the most important festival. The first major holiday is the Chinese New Year, held on the first day of the first lunar month, equivalent to February on the Western calendar. Rituals in the temple and the home celebrate the Three Pure Ones with an offering of sweets, food, and exchange of gifts with family and friends. The first day of this festival, the Dragon (Lion) Dance is performed to celebrate long life, immortality and union with the spirits.
