Syphilis

A sexually transmitted infectionPresented by Paige Henderson and Lily Gearhart

A chancre starts to appear where bacteria entered the body, most commonly around the genitalia.

A non-itchy rash will start to break out three weeks to six months later, most commonly on the hands or feet. This usually heals without treatment in 2 to 6 weeks

Then, sometime after 3 years of infection, 30-40% of people progress to the latent stage. this can cause plenty of irreversible damage, such as tumors, degenerative nervous system, dementia, ataxia, paralysis, and blindness. Then you'll probably die.

Next comes the latent phase, where the disease seems to heal and becomes non-infectious. This can last anywhere from 3 to 30 years, or never complete at all.

Syphilis is transmitted via direct contact, often in anal, oral, or vaginal sex. Syphilis is most common in men who have sex with other men.
