HistoryNatives have lived in Suriname for many, many years but Europes first learned of Suriname in 1498 after Christopher Columbus saw it's shores from his ship. Vicente Yanez Pinzon visited the region in 1500. In 1651 a British colony was the first sucsessful settlement in Suriname. In 1667 it was seized by the Dutch fleet and was under the Netherlands control untill it's independence in 1975.
Sports The most popular sports in Suriname are football (soccer), basketball and volleyball.
