1-Before his death, the Prophet did not appoint a successor and the two groups had to fight for power.2- The Shi’a who were the group wanted the new leader to be coming from the prophet’s family and rule by following the holly book, the Qur'an. 3-The Sunni, wanted the leader to be assigned by a vote among the prophet’s followers and rule by a system of Caliph.
