Summer Fun Camp

Summer Fun Camp Tecate, Mexico

by Catherine JonesMy experience...

After visiting Tecate, Mexico with my church, I was changed forever. These sweet children stole my heart and I fell in love with their culture and the way that they live. They made me feel like I was a part of their family even though I was a stranger to them. It was such a wonderful experience putting on a summer bible camp for these children and showing them how Jesus loves, even though I was the one that did most of the learning.

I definitely did not blend in by any means, but they welcomed me with open arms and were excited to share their culture, especially food, with me and the other people that I was there with. After the initial culture shock and fear of how they would act around me, I was pleasantly surprised and felt comfortable as soon as I arrived.A moment that I will never forget is when I was on the playgrond and a little boy came up to me and hugged my leg. For the rest of the day, he would not leave my side. We could barely even communicate with each other because of the language barrier, but the unconditional love he showed me really amazed me. I don't believe I had any biases or expectations about the people in Tecate, but I did have anxiety and fear about not being accepted by the community. I really didn't even have to make any attempts to fit in because the were so welcoming and loving.

I think this experience really showed me how important it is to make every child in your classroom know they are loved and supported. They should feel welcomed in the classroom whenever they come to school and should never be embarrased or feel the need to hide their culture. Feeling like they belong is essential to building their confidence and helping them become successful learners. Culturally diverse children are often intimidated to express themselves, but I want every one of my students to know that it is a safe place to do so.

"The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people."
