Sugar In Our Lives

The truth is that sugar is pure, contains no man made chemicals or warning labels. Sugar is a pure carbohydrate, which is an important nutrient that supplies energy to the body. In addition, sugar plays an important role in making other foods taste better and serves many vital functions in cooking and baking.

*During the refining process, the natural sugar that is stored in the cane stalk or beet root is separated from the rest of the plant material. *Sugar cane has been an integral part of the south Louisiana economy and culture for more than 200 years. *Louisiana sugar cane yields range from 30 to 50 tons per acre, with recoveries ranging from 180 to 240 pounds of sugar produced from each ton of cane.*Sugarcane is a tropical crop trying to survive in Louisiana’s temperate climate.*The ability to grow sugarcane in Louisiana and increase sugar yields to levels attained in the tropics has largely been the result of sugarcane breeding efforts.
