Risk FactorsAnyone can experience a stroke at any age. Your chances of having a stroke increase if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, or sickle cell disease.

What is a Stroke?A stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is either interrupted or reduced. When this happens, the brain does not receive enough oxygen or nutrients which causes brain cell death. There are 3 kinds: ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and transient ischemic attack.

Causes of StrokeIschemic Strokes: caused by arteries that connect to the brain becoming blocked or narrowed. Hemorrhagic Strokes: caused by arteries in the brain either leaking blood or bursting open.TIA: caused by a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain

-Approximately 800,000 people have a stroke per year-A stroke occurs somewhere every 40 seconds

Treatment Options-Treatment can begin with drugs to break down clots and prevent further ones from forming, to reduce the pressure in the brain, overall blood pressure, prevent seizures and prevent sudden constrictions of blood vessels. .-There are other procedures that can be carried out to decrease the risk of future strokes such as a carotid endarterectomy (a surgeon opening the carotid artery and removing any plaque that might be blocking it) or an angioplasty (a surgeon inflates a small balloon in a narrowed artery and then inserting a stent into the opening in order to prevent the artery from narrowing again).-certain forms of rehab may need to be carried out in order for a stroke victim to fully recover.

How to Prevent Stroke:Avoid illicit drugs, maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy blood pressure, don't smoke, and consume alcohol in moderation.
