STEPTEN F. AUSTIN

Stephen was born in Virginia on November 3, 1793, but his family moved west when he was still young. He graduated at Transylvania Univesity Lexington Kentucky. Stephen Fuller Austin was a lawyer, settler and administrator who played a key role in the secession of Texas from Mexico. He brought hundreds of families into Texas. At first, Austin was a agent for Mexico, playing by the “rules” that kept changing. Later, he became a fierce fighter for Texas independence and is today remembered in Texas as one of the most important founding fathers of the state.

Stephen. F Austin is known as "The Father of Texas. He served as a militia officer and was a member of the Missouri territorial legislature. He was also appointed by the Arkansas' governor as a circuit judge. On the death of his father, Moses Austin, he took over a grant to bring U.S. settlers into Spanish Texas and Stephen lead 300 families to the new land of Texas in 1823.

Lasting Impact

The American pioneer Stephen Fuller Austin (1793-1836) was the chief colonizer of Texas.
