Stem Cells


What are stem cells?How are they important?

Stem Cells are unspecialized cells that can both reproduce itself indefinately and, under appropriate conditons, differentiate into specialized cells of one or more types.

HOW THIS WORK IS BEING DONE....Regenerative medicine and cell therapy are emerging clinical disciplines in the field of stem cell biology. The most important sources for cell transplantation are human embryonic and adult stem cells.

The importance of stem cell research is that cell lines can be developed to produce tissues to treat medical conditions, as well as be used for medical research.

The Methods:

TOOLS ' TECHNIQUES Intracellular staining can be used in combination with surface staining to identify critical time points, markers, and proportions of cells moving along particular differentiation pathways. Intracellular staining protocols require the cells to be fixed and permeabilized so that antibodies can access the cytoplasm and nucleus. Since fixation effectively kills the cells, intracellular staining is not compatible with live-cell sorting.


Caperchi's discoveriy has shown that all expressed traits are linked to a specific gene. These experiments proving this started in the 1970's. Stem cells have also lightened the genetics of human tissue growth. The transplanting of cells can one day become a life saving technique!

-One keydiscovery was in 1980, a man by the name of Caperchi figured a way to target any one gene to alter.-Stem Cells have given us valuable information on human embryotic development-Stem Cell research has also lead to the transplant of healthy cells

The Pros and Cons:

Cons1. Although scientists have made incredible progress within this field, some of the uses of stem cells cannot yet be taken advantage of because the processes are still under development.2. Some of the uses of stem cells require identical conditions that cannot yet be created effectively which means that not all testing cna be considered valid. 3. This field requires a lot of research still consdiering most experimentation so far has been on rats and not many test have been done with humans.

Pros1. Stem cells have proven to be effective in treating hundreds of diseases in humans, as well as being the primary process responsible for bone marrow transplants for leukemia.2. Stem cells harvested from things such as umbilical cords have been proven to save the lives of people who are need of less invasive stem cell treatment.3. Stem cell research has tuaght us a lot about what genes are responsible for specific parts of the body and how we can isolate them and identify where certain mutations can come from.

Group Opinion:

We believe that Stem Cell research is a good thing because although there are some drawbacks, we believe the pros outweigh the cons because stem cell research can help treat many diseases.
