Standards-Based Grading

Standards-based grading focuses on student's mastery of standards. Traditional course grades include many factors such as quizzes, homework, behavior, and attendance while Standards-based grading focuses on on mastery. In a classroom that uses standards-based grading nonacdemic elements are not included in the grade. Standards-based grading is an issue that has divided individuals. Some are in great support of moving towards standards-based grading while others want to continue with the traditional form of grading used today.

Writing and Solving UnitAlgebra 8

I created a unit on writing and solving equation and inequalities for my Algebra 8 class. The grading was really easy to look at students work and judge it as attempted, developing, progressing, proficient, and exceeding. I created a rubric that put all the standards in front of the students in order to help them understand what was expected of them. It was very beneficial for some students who showed they knew how to write equations and inequalities even though they got some wrong because of the minor mistake they made.


- Students focus on mastry of standards- Students show exactly what they know- Increase emphasis on student learning- Encourages differentiation by teachers to help each student- Students are graded on the standards they are supposed to learn- Shows student's progress throughout the course- Reduces meaningless paperwork for students/teachers

- Top students are not necessarily rewarded- Not all students test well, daily work and assignments might assess better for some them- Students moving in/out of the district or class- Potentially poor study skills because homework and daily scores are not part of grade- Time for students to redo/retake assessments
