Catherine was born in Burgundy, France on May 2, 1806. Her parents were Pierre Laboure and Madeline Gontard. Her original name was Zoe, but she later changed it to Catherine. She died on December 31, 1876 in Paris, France. Saint Catherine Laboure had an incorruptable body which is placed in the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal.

On July 18, the blessed Mother made her first of three apparitions to Catherine, though Mary remained unnamed to her. She said that she would give Catherine a mission and it would cause her suffering. She also predicted a revolt that broke out in Paris in 1870. Once again on November 27, 1830, Mary appeared to Catherine. At this apparation, Mary appeared to Catherine on the alter at the chapel. Here, she revealed herself to her told Catherine that her mission would be to create a medal. "All who wear it will receive great graces," Mary said. On June 20, 1832, Catherine had the medals struck for the Blessed Mother.
