Sprains and Dislocations

Definition: A sprain is a joint injury in which some of the fibers of the supporting ligament are ruptured, but the continuity of the ligaments remain intact.

A dislocation is the act of dislocating of a bone or joint out of its place..

Shoulder Dislocation

Many things can cause a sprain or a dislocation. Falling, twisting, or getting hit can force a joint out of its normal position. This can also cause ligaments around the joint to stretch or tear.

Symptoms of a sprain or dislocation include pain, swelling, bruising, inability to move a joint or manuver with muscle.

Treating a dislocation includes popping the joint back into place and following that, ice should be applied on the affected area and ibuprofen should be taken. For a sprain, ice should be applied to the affected area immediately after the injury. After icing, wrap in protective bandaging. The part that was injured should indure as little work as possible depending on how seriuos the injury and do not do physical activities until approved by a doctor.

An Orthopedist is usually one that would deal with a sprain or dislocation, but the location of the injury really depends on who would treat it. For example, if someone were to sprain their ankle, they would get health care from a Podiatrist (foot doctor).
