Sputnik 1 launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. On January 31, 1958, Explorer 1 launched and became the first U.S. satellite. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder, AIRS is launched on May 4, 2002. (Current Satellite)
In the summers of 2012 and 2013, two fires destroyed hundreds of homes in my city. Because the fire fighters had the use of satellites to track and determine the boundaries of the fires, the Waldo Canyon Fire and Black Forest Fire were extinguished safely and quickly.
Satellites are put into place by a space agency such as NASA. These satellites continue to monitor the Earth or a particular area of concern then using a telephoto camera, an infrared filter and a recording device, they record photos and campair inorder to tell if a fire has started. All this information is then sent to the Forest Service to analyze and take care of.
