Sound waves need to travel through a medium such as a solid, liquid, or gas. The sound waves move through each of these mediums by vibrating the molecules in the matter. The molecules in solids are packed very tightly. Some common whips such as the bullwhip are able to move faster than sound: the tip of the whip breaks the sound barrier and causes a sharp crack—literally a sonic boom. Firearms since the 19th century have generally had a supersonic muzzle velocity.

Did you know you can break stuff with sound. If you match the frequency of that object and turn the volume up you can manipulate that object. Sometimes to the point that you can break the object glass works very well.

It is likely that you have heard the term in space no one can hear you scream. That is because for sound to travel it needs molecules to travel through. Sound waves works like dominoes. (more on that later) This means in the cold empty vacuum of space their is nothing that will let the sound waves travel through them.

Sound has many applications more than just music and communication. Sound can be used in ultrasound. Which is used in ships and boats to measure the depth of the seabed or it is use for medical purposes like searching for cancer or the development of babies.

Sound travels at 340.29 Meters per second, but did you know that sound travels through solids faster than than liquids and gasses. This is because the molecules are more tightly packed in a solid than a liquid or gas. Sound travels 4 times faster through solids than the other 2 forms of matter.

To some people this is a dumb question the obvious answer is air right? Because steel is so dense and the molecules are super tightly compact this lets the sound travel through faster. Water is more dense than air but less dense than steel. Cold air is not very tightly pack together but warm air the molecules are extremely far apart compared to the other three.

Sound waves exist as variations of pressure in a medium such as air. They are created by the vibration of an object, which causes the air surrounding it to vibrate. The vibrating air then causes the human eardrum to vibrate, which the brain interprets as sound.
