Man Exploration of Space

1949

Albert II, was the first monkey in space. He was a Rhesus monkey, a type of monkey that originally comes from Asia. Albert went into space on 14th June, 1949 in a specially adapted American V2 rocket, that flew to a height of 83 miles from earth.

the first animals were launched into space. Fruit flies were used to study the effects of space travel on animals, and were chosen because they are more similar to humans than previousley thought.

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin completes the first manned space flight, orbiting the Earth in 108 minutes.

VOCAB-solar system-the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.sun-the star around which the earth orbits;the light or warmth received from the earth's sunatmosphere-the envelope of gases around the earth or another planetEarth's magnetic field- The magnetic field that surrounds and permeates the Earth and it's the presence of this field that causes compass needles to line up in a north-south direction.Ozone-a colorless unstable toxic gaswater-a colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.magnetosphere-the region surrounding the earth or another astronomical body in which its magnetic field is the predominant effective magnetic field.astronaut-a person who is trained to travel in a spacecraftspace walk-a person who is trained to travel in a spacecraftzero gravity-the state or condition in which there is no apparent force of gravity acting on a body

N.A.S.A. is founded, taking over existing National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics.

Luna 3 translunar satellite is launched, orbiting the moon and photographing 70 percent of the far side of the moon

Final space shuttle mission ends when Atlantis arrives at Kennedy Space Center.

American Neil Armstrong is the first man to walk on the Moon. He stepped onto the Moon's surface, in the Sea of Tranquility ,about 20 minutes after first opening the hatch on the Eagle landing craft. The Eagle has landed." He put his left foot down first and said: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He described the surface as being like powdered charcoal and the landing craft left a crater about a foot deep. 'We came in peace'

Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, completes 48 orbits.

Three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsayev, die during re-entry of their Soyuz 11 spacecraft. A government commission disclosed that the three died 30 minutes before landing because a faulty valve depressurized the spacecraft.

Soviet Soyuz 1 is launched, carrying Vladimir M. Komarov. On April 24 it crashed, killing Komarov, the first spaceflight fatality

Zero Gravity-Since there is no gravity, astronauts have to alter everything they do from drinking water to brushing their teeth. EVERYTHING floats in space so you have to drink liquids from containers. You have to use containers for just about all things. Even though it’s cool, I can imagine it gets frustrating. Since you are not working your muscles, they weaken along with your muscles that weaken from not using them, and coming back to earth and trying to walk as normal would be very difficult without lifting weights and building up strength.
