MarylandCecil Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore, founded Maryland in 1632. November of 1633 about 200 Catholic settlers and Cecil’s brother boarded ships and set sail for Marie’s Land (later Maryland) named after King Charles I wife Henrietta Maria.
VirginiaVirginia was founded in 1607. The town was named Jamestown after King James I. The original colony was plagued by corruption, mismanagement, and attacks from the local Powhatan Indians. Tobacco became the colony’s cash crop, thanks to John Rolfe.

North CarolinaThe name Carolana means "Land of Charles" in latin. King Charles named the colony after himself.
South CarolinaColonists kept having problems growing indigo until a teenager, Eliza Pinckney, began experimenting and found better ways to grow the crop in 1774.
GeorgiaFor over 30 years, Spain, France, and England fought over the land that would finally become Georgia.

Southern plantations grew tobacco, rice, and indigo, which they sold to buyers in Englnd and elsewhere in America.
